WiTricity Corp, in collaboration with Delphi Automotive is working on a new system to make electric cars charging very easy. The two companies plan to develop a wireless car charging system for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles.
WiTricity’s wireless system works by charging a car as it sits on a garage floor by embedding the system in a paved parking spot. Unlike other conventional systems, the new device will be capable of transferring energy more efficiently over significantly larger distances and allows for more misalignment than other inductive systems.
According to WiTricity CEO Eric Giler, the system will be able to transfer over 3,300 watts, being comparable with the most residential plug sockets because it can charge an electric vehicle at the same rate.
“This is groundbreaking technology that could enable automotive manufacturers to integrate wireless charging directly into the design of their hybrid and electric vehicles” said Randy Sumner, Delphi development boss.
