A few months ago, Smart has unveiled an amazing electric car concept dubbed ForSpeED, at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Now, the same company said it is planning to launch its first electrically assisted bicycle, unveiled at the Paris Auto Show a year ago.
According to the automaker, the near-production ready version of their electric bicycle will be on display at the “Eurobike” show in Friedrichshafen (31 August – 3 September 2011) and at the Frankfurt Motor Show (13 – 25 September 2011). The ebike will also be on the European and North American market in the first half of 2012.
The Smart e-bike is equipped with a braking energy recovery system and a rear-wheel hub motor developed by BionX. The Smart eBike comes with a USB interface, a 400 Wh lithium-ion battery and Magura MT4 disc brakes. The rider has the possibility to choose via a switch how much power he wants the 250-watt electric motor to deliver to support his muscle power.
A company official said that the bike has a range of more than 100 kilometers. Smart eBike‘s price is estimated at 2,900 EUR ($4,200).
Kind of expensive, if you ask me.
