Europe’s biggest onshore wind farm is located in East Renfrewshire and now it is about to have a massive expansion. The company called ScottishPower Renewables plans to add another 75 turbines to Whitelee wind farm on Eaglesham Moor until 2012.
Currently the site is equipped with 140 wind turbines (producing 322MW) that are able to generate enough electricity to power 180,000 homes. But now, thanks to this expansion, the 215 turbines will generate 539MW, being enough to provide energy to 300,000 homes.
The site has begun producing energy in 2008 and during the time it received other 100 turbines, each with a 3MW capacity.
“By itself at 217MW, the extension would be one of the largest onshore wind farms in the UK, so we are starting another major construction project in Scotland. Whitelee wind farm is already the largest onshore wind farm in Europe and this extension pushing the overall capacity to 539MW will make it one of the largest in the world,” said Simon Christian, UK director of ScottishPower Renewables.
