Porsche has revealed additional details and specification of its coming electric sports car Taycan, formerly known as the Mission E sedan. The German manufacturer stated that the car will be able to charge its battery to 80 percent in around 15 minutes when connected to the specific high-capacity charger.
This is groundbreaking progress, because its closest competitor in this field, Tesla, needs double the time to achieve the same level of charge when plugged into to its supercharger.
Porsche succeeded in making this progress by using its new 800-volt battery pack, compared to the conventional 400-volt one that is an industry standard. However, the car loses to its competitor, Tesla Model S P100D, in pretty much any other field.
The Taycan’s battery unit prioritizes speed over weight. Porsche chose to employ ultra-fast charging solutions, using an intelligent charging protocol and a heat exchanger system that can get the vehicles’ batteries up to operating temperature quickly and cooling them when needed.
The Porsche Taycan has an adequate driving range of 310 miles (500 km) and it can be enough for many consumers, but it falls short of the almost 375 miles (600 km) claimed by the range-topping Tesla Model S.
Porsche uses a similar all-wheel-drive layout to high-powered Teslas with a motor powering each axle. The powertrain produces a total of 440 kW, and the Porsche electric sports car can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds. On the other hand, the Model S P100D claims superior figures, producing 568 kW and can go 0-62 mph in just 2.7 seconds.
Porsche expects to build up to 20,000 units of their first all-electric sports car, Taycan. Global sales will start next year.
Additionally, Porsche is collaborating with Ford and all members of Volkswagen Audi Group to expand charging infrastructure, primarily in Europe and China. The German car manufacturer believes that with moderate growth until 2025, the electric grid would be exposed to a higher stress.
